Supporting WRAP to fight against food waste!

We have recently been awarded a research type project to support WRAP on the re-distribution of food waste in the UK. We will be working with manufacturers and retailers to calculate the financial costs to the food supply chain of redistributing surplus food while also surveying any non-financial barriers that are present. This has come at an imperative time ….. Christmas.

As well as being a time of too much tinsel, telly and corny tunes – Christmas is also when many of us waste more food than usual, brace yourself for the facts ….. According to Unilever in 2015 4.2 million Christmas dinners were wasted across the UK. Which is equivalent to 263,000 turkeys; 7.5 million mince pies; 740,000 slices of Christmas pudding; 17.2 million Brussels sprouts; 11.9 million carrots and 11.3 million roast potatoes.

Love Food Hate Waste has lots of helpful tips to ensure the food in your fridge this Christmas does not go to waste, and for that food that is surplus to needs, the redistribution schemes for which the current project (underway by FRM and partners) support – will bring that food to those that need it.
